McCARTNEY-esque: All-Star Homage Playlists To His BEATLES And SOLO Styles!

To honor PAUL McCARTNEY's unending impact on music, here are two Music Players of famous artists imitating him.

One playlist tributes his many BEATLES styles and the other homages his SOLO styles.

McCartney-esque Tribute

Here are 150 artists from every era and genre, lovingly imitating Paul's styles with THE BEATLES. The songs are arranged in "sonic order", meaning each of Paul's Beatles styles in order sonically from 1962 to 1970; the early MerseyBeat, the Folk Pop, the Psychedelia and Baroque Pop, and finally the boogie Rawk and piano Hymn sounds.

There are favored guests and many surprises along the way.

You would expect THE RUTLES, BADFINGER, ELO, CHEAP TRICK, THE BANGLES, CROWDED HOUSE, and ELLIOTT SMITH.

But how about SIOUXSIE SIOUX, GENE SIMMONS, ELASTICA, THE BETA BAND, and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE?

Because THE BEATLES' sounds and fashions were so fluid, they are a nexus point for every possible angle of Rock music. Without boundaries and only possibilities, they have influenced every kind of band in their wake. This takes us to the current wave of youth who wear Beatles T-shirts and listen to acolytes like SUPERGRASS, KOMEDA, SLOAN, THE DONNAS, GRANDADDY, KAISER CHIEFS, TRAVIS, BON IVER, PANIC AT THE DISCO, and THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS, all here.

Tribute

Here are 150 artists from every era and genre, lovingly imitating Paul's SOLO styles. The songs flow in basic chronological order with his peers responding to or covering Paul's styles from 1970 to today; the piano Ballads, the boogie Rockers, the power Pop, the robo Synth, the beatle-ish Renaissance, the avant collages, and the new acoustic Classics. (Some artists are arranged in "sonic order', meaning they are placed next to songs where their sound matches that era.)

Again there are favored guests and many surprises along the way.

Paul's influence has no boundaries. His optimistic vitality, expressed though raunchy blues, hymnal piano, renaissance strumming, ethereal harmonies, and experimental noize, speaks to everyone.

Here are acolytes from every era and angle:
From the '70s and THE MOVE, ELO, CHEAP TRICK, QUEEN, NILSSON, EMMIT RHODES, and TODD RUNDGREN.

To the '80s and ELVIS COSTELLO, SQUEEZE, XTC, THE BANGLES, THAT PETROL EMOTION, and CROWDED HOUSE.

To the '90s and GUNS 'N' ROSES, ELLIOTT SMITH, FASTBALL, PAUL WELLER, CARLEEN ANDERSON, BOO RADLEYS, and THE MELVINS.

To the 2000s with SUPER FURRY ANIMALS, HOT CHIP, FOXY SHAZAM, SCISSOR SISTERS, JET, and FLAMING LIPS.

ROCK Sex: "Taxman" - The Beatles > The Jam > Bangles > Beastie Boys > Cypress Hill > Sean Lennon

ROCK Sex tells you how it will be.

Today's relay race of cultural handoff is the song "Taxman".

_______________

George Harrison wote the original in 1966, with the unusual assist of John Lennon on a few lines, and the even more unusual twist of Paul McCartney on lead guitar!

George's frustration over the insanely high tax rate of the UK at the time has become a perennial anthem because of its lyrics as much as its terrifically funky riff line, which grooves in the spirit of James Brown's "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" and the "Batman" TV Theme.

THE BEATLES -"Taxman" (1966)

Almost immediately the great Garage Rock band The Music Machine, led by Sean Bonniwell, did this seething cover. Lennon had contributed the two harmony lines calling out Harold Wilson and Edward Heath, who ran the two political parties of Britain. But Bonniwell changes that to President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary Of State Dean Rusk, as an unusually early and gutsy dig against the taxpayer-funded Vietnam War.

THE MUSIC MACHINE -"Taxman" (1966)

Pleasantly unexpected was this soulful version by Memphis great Junior Parker, with its slinky groove and reflective stance.

JUNIOR PARKER -"Taxman" (1970)

Later, anglophiles Cheap Trick did an original sequel, which mentions The Beatles and probably took its title from the lyrical cue "ah-ah, Mister Heath" in the original.

CHEAP TRICK -"Taxman, Mister Thief" (1976)

Contrary to their Punk peers, THE JAM openly owned up to their Mod and Beat roots. The bass riff of "Taxman" first triggered this song.

THE JAM -"Dreams Of Children" (1980)

...and then another song on the same album (US version)!
[They also did a cover of "And Your Bird Can Sing", as well.]

THE JAM -"Start!" (1980)

The Beatles' daughters then get into the queue.

THE BANGLES -"I'm In Line" (1982)

Here's that bass coupled with some of the rhythmic tumble of "Tomorrow Never Knows".

RIDE -"Seagull" (1990)

Having sampled The Beatles on their epochal PAUL'S BOUTIQUE (1989), which many consider the SGT. PEPPER of Rap albums, here's THE BEASTIES bringing it oddly full circle by covering The Jam.

BEASTIE BOYS -"Start!" (2000)

Staying on the HipHop tip, remember Junior Parker's version? Well, CYPRESS HILL did when they sampled it for this spliff bliss anthem.

CYPRESS HILL -"I Wanna Get High" (1993)

Here's the riff reaquipped on a groovy trip from the film OCEANS 12.

DAVID HOLMES -"Yen On a Carousel" (2004)

What would it sound like if Joe Meek remixed the REVOLVER album as a Spaghetti Western soundtrack?

OF MONTREAL -"Coquet Coquette" (2010)

Here's Sean Lennon and Les Claypool (Primus) abstracting it through prog-adelica.

ROCK Sex: "Live" - The Merry Go Round > The Bangles

ROCK Sex says 'don't waste a day'.

_______________

Today's carousel of culture is about the song "Live", first done by cult tunesmith Emitt Rhodes and The Merry Go Round.

Emitt Rhodes did excellent solo albums in the early '70s that are worth seeking out by fans of The Beatles, The Raspberries, Badfinger, Harry Nilsson, Paul McCartney, Lenny Kravitz, Chris von Sniedern, Ed Harcourt, and Jim Noir.

THE MERRY-GO-ROUND -"Live" (1966)

Emerging from the revivalist Paisley Underground scene of the early '80s, The Bangles did a letter perfect rendition of it. Their stellar debut album "All Over the Place" (1984) is a gem that I will never tire of promoting; a must for fans of Mersey Beat, NUGGETS, and Girls In the Garage (hint, hint).

The Bangles traded singing leads and this one is sung by drummer Debbi Peterson.

THE BANGLES -"Live" (live, 2006)

Later, Emitt Rhodes was backed by the Peterson sisters from The Bangles, and guitarist Richard Thompson.
